Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands (LAS) provides free civil legal help to people who cannot afford a lawyer.
We serve individuals and families across Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands who are facing serious legal problems. Our work includes help with housing and eviction, family law, domestic violence, benefits, education, consumer and money issues, taxes, and reentry after incarceration.
Each year, LAS helps thousands of Tennesseans protect their homes, safety, income, and basic rights. Our attorneys and advocates work alongside community partners, volunteer lawyers, and supporters to make sure justice is not limited by income.
At LAS, we believe everyone deserves fairness, dignity, and a chance to be heard—no matter who they are or how much money they have.

En Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands, vemos el costo humano de la injusticia todos los días. 1968
Legal Services of Nashville, Inc. se constituyó el 9 de febreroth por ocho miembros de la Asociación de Abogados de Nashville (NBA). Recibieron una subvención de la OEO, que fue una de las últimas subvenciones antes de la elección de Nixon en 1968.

Tennessee Civil Legal Needs Assessment 2025
In 2025, the Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services conducted a comprehensive statewide Civil Legal Needs Assessment to better understand the legal challenges facing low-income Tennesseans and gaps in access to justice. Based on surveys of more than 1,000 households and 165 legal, judicial, and community stakeholders across all 95 counties, the assessment found that over 78% of respondents experienced at least one civil legal problem in the past year, yet fewer than one in four sought legal help, largely due to cost, lack of awareness, and access barriers.
The most common unmet legal needs were:
- Healthcare and medical debt (36.5%),
- Family law issues including domestic violence and custody (30.2%)
- Housing instability such as eviction and landlord disputes (24.1%).
The assessment also highlights significant disparities affecting rural residents, people with disabilities, seniors, immigrants, and households earning under $40,000 annually. Persistent barriers—including limited internet access, language access challenges, and staffing shortages among legal aid providers—continue to widen the justice gap. The report calls for expanded funding, stronger community partnerships, innovative service delivery models, and targeted outreach to ensure Tennesseans can access the civil legal help they need to remain safe, housed, and financially stable.
