Victim Advocate
Location: Clarksville
Salary $50,000.00 – $57,00.00 per year
The Victim Advocate serves as a primary case handler for victims of intimate partner violence. The Victim Advocate coordinates with attorneys; establishes and maintains positive working relationships with organizations in the service area and state that benefit the client population; prepares and presents community education workshops and conducts outreach events about Legal Aid Society’s mission and services. The Victim Advocate in Clarksville will focus on issues presented by the more rural counties in its service area, including court presence, community education, and court accompaniment for clients. This position is funded in part by, and in collaboration with, one or more grants. Personnel must adhere to goals and outcomes detailed in the grant contract. This position is funded for the duration of the grant and subsequent renewal may result in modification of job duties and responsibilities.
Responsibilities:

Interview applicants and, in consultation with supervising attorney, determine level of service to be provided.

Serve as primary case handler and advocate for clients in a variety of substantive legal areas for clients, as assigned, including divorces and orders of protection.

Assess the needs of clients, providing relevant information and making appropriate referrals to other community resources and for additional Legal Aid Society (LASMTC) cases.

Maintain accurate and orderly client files, adhering to case management database policies and guidelines.

Support the casework of attorneys as assigned.

Carefully follow directions and promptly respond to requests of attorneys and other LASMTC staff.

Regularly attend court proceedings in and counties.

Assist applicants with safety planning and drafting of statements supporting their request for protective orders, all in consult with an attorney.

Travel within the LASMTC service area may be necessary.
Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree or a minimum of two years of relevant experience.

Social work experience a plus.

Previous employment or volunteer work with a law office, court, social service agency, or other related setting.

Experience working with low-income people and victims of domestic violence.

Smart and coachable with a high degree of initiative and emotional intelligence.

Appreciates the experiences and needs of people from diverse economic, social, and cultural backgrounds.

Basic proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel software.

Effective oral and written communication skills, including in client interviews and while helping people in crisis.

Fluency in written and spoken Spanish/Arabic is a plus.
