Legal Aid Society has an opening for a Lead Family Law Attorney in its Nashville Office. This attorney will provide day-to-day management of the Nashville Family Law Unit and promote efficient, high-quality advocacy. They will also provide legal representation to eligible clients in civil cases, seeking safety and independence. Primary clientele will include low-income victims of domestic violence and sexual assault seeking Orders of Protection or divorces. As part of a holistic approach, representation may include varying areas of law as needed to ensure the independence and safety of the victim. This attorney will participate in judicial and administrative advocacy and community education for clients in accordance with program guidelines and priorities and the Code of Professional Responsibility and provides requested administrative case information, as needed for specific funders.
The Lead Family Law Attorney will aid in the coordination of the civil-legal advocacy program for volunteer attorneys who assist victims/petitioners at Order of Protection hearings in Circuit and General Sessions Criminal/Civil Court and will serve as the chief liaison between Legal Aid Society and the Metro Nashville-Davidson County Office of Family Safety.
Must be Tennessee licensed attorney in good standing with the Tennessee Bar or eligible for admission soon. Have no less than seven years of legal experience as an attorney with demonstrated interest in public interest law, family law, and issues unique to victims of domestic violence and no less than one-year experience assisting domestic violence victims in civil and/or criminal courts. Ability to relate to the needs of people of diverse backgrounds and adhere to confidentiality standards. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form. Excellent interpersonal skills. Experienced in public speaking and training others on the law. Some knowledge or experience in production and website design a plus. Proficient with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and Legal Files database preferred. Ability to learn new computer skills. Highly creative, innovative and organized. Self-motivated and able to work independently and as a team. Experience working under and reporting on an OVW grant preferred. Must have driver’s license and access to transportation. Fluency in written and spoken Spanish a plus.
