Advocate
Location: Oak Ridge
Salary $50,000.00 – $57,00.00 per year
The Oak Ridge Advocate serves to provide legal information and advocacy assistance to help empower eligible families to overcome legal obstacles related to public benefits, housing, consumer, and family law issues. The Oak Ridge advocate position supports cases handled by attorneys; creates and maintains positive working relationships with organizations in the service area and state that would benefit the client population; prepares and presents community education workshops and conducts outreach events about Legal Aid Society’s mission and services. This position is funded in part by and in collaboration with the Family Centered Legal Services Grant. Personnel must adhere to goals, and outcomes detailed in the grant contract. This position is funded for the duration of the grant and subsequent renewal may result in modification of job duties and responsibilities.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as primary case handler and advocate for clients in a variety of substantive legal areas for clients, as assigned.
- Interview applicants and, in consultation with supervising attorney, determine level of service to be provided.
- Assess the needs of clients, providing relevant information and making appropriate referrals to other community resources and for additional Legal Aid Society (LASMTC) cases.
- Maintain accurate and orderly client files, adhering to case management database policies and guidelines.
- Support the casework of attorneys as assigned.
- Carefully follow directions and promptly respond to requests of attorneys and other LASMTC staff.
- Travel within the LASMTC service area will be necessary.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree or a minimum of two years of relevant experience.
- Social work experience is a plus.
- Previous employment or volunteer work with a law office, court, social service agency, or other related setting.
- Experience working with low-income people.
- Appreciates the experiences and needs of people from diverse economic, social, and cultural backgrounds.
- Basic proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel software.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, including in client interviews and while helping people in crisis.
- Smart and coachable with a high degree of initiative and emotional intelligence.
- Fluency in written and spoken Spanish/Arabic is a plus.
- Driver’s license and reliable transportation.
