Senior HR Business Partner

Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands is seeking an experienced and mission-driven Senior HR Business Partner to join our Nashville, TN team.

As our primary HR leader, this full-time role is an exceptional opportunity for a seasoned HR professional to make a meaningful and lasting impact — both within our organization and in the communities we serve across Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands. This position will play a central role in shaping our people strategy, strengthening HR infrastructure, and building the foundation for a scalable, high-performing HR function.

About the Role

The Senior HR Business Partner will serve as a strategic and hands-on HR leader supporting multiple offices across our organization. This individual will partner closely with executive leadership and Managing Attorneys to align HR strategy with organizational goals, lead workforce planning and organizational design, and oversee the full spectrum of day-to-day HR operations — from employee relations and performance management to compliance, benefits administration, and HRIS management.

As the HR function grows, this role will also have the opportunity to help define and build our HR team structure, making it an ideal position for a professional who is eager to lead and grow alongside the organization.

What We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate brings 7+ years of progressive HR experience, demonstrated expertise in Tennessee and federal employment law, and a proven ability to advise senior leaders and influence organizational decision-making. Experience in nonprofit or mission-driven organizations is strongly preferred, as is familiarity with Paylocity and SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification.

Compensation & Benefits

This is a full-time position with a salary range of $90,000 – $105,000, commensurate with experience. We offer a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance, HSA, life insurance, short-term disability, 401(k), and generous vacation, sick leave, and holiday time.

Senior Finance Manager

About the Role

Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands is seeking an experienced Senior Finance Manager to lead our financial operations. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of all accounting and reporting functions — from day-to-day accounting to board-level financial reporting, grant compliance, and audit preparation.

This role is an opportunity to build structure, improve systems, and make a lasting impact at one of the region's most trusted nonprofit legal services organizations — advancing equal justice for low-income people across Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Operations & Accounting

  • Own and oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll coordination, and cash management
  • Execute and maintain a consistent monthly, quarterly, and annual close process
  • Maintain and reconcile all bank accounts, investment accounts, and client trust accounts
  • Develop, refine, and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • Identify and correct inconsistencies, errors, and inefficiencies in current accounting practices

Financial Reporting & Budgeting

  • Prepare and deliver monthly financial statements, board reports, and variance analyses
  • Lead development of the annual organizational budget in collaboration with leadership
  • Monitor cash flow and provide projections to support operational decision-making
  • Provide ad hoc financial analysis and reporting as needed

Grants & Compliance

  • Oversee financial tracking and reporting for grants in coordination with stakeholders
  • Ensure expenditures align with grant requirements, budgets, and restrictions
  • Lead audit preparation and serve as primary liaison to external auditors
  • Oversee preparation of Form 990, 1099s, 1096, and all required financial filings

Process Standardization & System Utilization

  • Document and standardize key financial processes and workflows
  • Improve efficiency and consistency within existing accounting systems
  • Identify and implement practical improvements that reduce manual work and errors

Organizational Leadership

  • Serve as the primary point of accountability for financial accuracy and reporting
  • Partner with leadership to improve financial visibility and support decision-making
  • Establish financial discipline and accountability across departments

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance
  • At least 5 years of progressive accounting or finance experience
  • Strong experience with full-cycle accounting and financial reporting
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting, including grants and fund accounting
  • Demonstrated ability to identify issues, implement structure, and improve operational consistency
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills with strong attention to detail
  • Project management skills and systems integration experience
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel)
  • Authorized to work in the United States (visa sponsorship not available)

Fellowships and Internships

Fellowships

Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands frequently sponsors candidates for public interest fellowships, including Skadden and Equal Justice Works fellowships. LAS will also consider sponsoring candidates for other fellowships for which they may be eligible.

LAS will consider prospective fellowship candidates who have a demonstrated commitment to public interest legal work and who are dedicated to working with low income and vulnerable individuals and families to obtain the basic necessities of life.

Internships

Legal Aid Society is a private, non-profit organization that provides free legal services to people with low income. Legal Aid Society's mission is to advance, defend and enforce the legal rights of low-income and vulnerable people in order to secure for them the basic necessities of life. We have 8 offices that serve 48 Tennessee counties. Legal Aid Society concentrates on 5 main areas of law practice: Family/Immigration, Health & Benefits, Consumer/Tax, Housing/Home Retention, and Employment.

LASMTC extends an invitation to law students enrolled in accredited law schools to submit applications for our legal internship opportunities. We offer internships during the spring, summer, and fall terms. The main purpose of these internships is to provide valuable and hands-on experiences in our organization's daily operations working alongside our attorneys and staff. We eagerly welcome fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and genuine enthusiasm for non-profit endeavors. Students interested in a summer internship must be prepared to devote a minimum time commitment of 20 hours per week for at least 10 weeks. Students interested in Fall and Spring internships must be prepared to devote a minimum time commitment of 10 hours per week for at least 8 weeks.

Available Locations: Nashville, Clarksville, Columbia, Cookeville, Gallatin, Murfreesboro, Oak Ridge, Tullahoma

Paid Internships:

LASMTC acknowledges that unpaid internships can create and further exacerbate racial and economic disparities that currently exist in our communities and run the risk of unequal socioeconomic and racial representation within the pool of applicants. Therefore, LASMTC has established a paid internship program for law students interested in pursuing a career in public interest law. Our paid internships are designed to attract a diverse pool of talented and motivated law students who are committed to our organization’s mission.

Unpaid Internships:

These legal interns are unpaid volunteers who work either for experience and/or for academic credit.

Qualifications:

  • Students enrolled in an accredited law program.
  • A demonstrated, strong dedication to public interest law as evidenced by relevant experience and coursework.
  • Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in using MS Office applications.
  • While not mandatory, knowledge of foreign languages would be considered a beneficial asset.
